Honoring the Lord in Every Purchase: Why I Love Hobby Lobby

I'm finally addressing the adorable and affordable elephant in the room...

Why am I SO OBSESSED with Hobby Lobby?

My mood whenever I step into a Hobby Lobby!

Well Mamas…if there’s one thing you know about me by now, you know that…

I LOVE HOBBY LOBBY!

(ok…two things…cause you also know I love Jesus!!!!)

But these two loves aren’t as far apart as they may seem…in fact, they connect to and inform each other. After all, my intent with my life is to always be Honoring the Lord, no matter what I’m doing. I want to Honor Him with every small action, every detail of my life.

And that includes where I shop!

By shopping Hobby Lobby, I’m not only getting great deals on beautiful home decor and craft items. I’m supporting Strong Christian Values and Good Christian Causes.

Their own website says it best:

Hobby Lobby’s Story:

In 1970, David and Barbara Green took out a $600 loan to begin making miniature picture frames out of their home. Two years later, the fledgling enterprise opened a 300-square-foot store in Oklahoma City, and Hobby Lobby was born. Today, with more than 1,000 stores, Hobby Lobby is the largest privately owned arts-and-crafts retailer in the world with approximately 50,000 employees and operating in forty-eight states.

Hobby Lobby offers over 80,000 items featuring home decor, seasonal decor, tableware, floral, art supplies, craft supplies, yarn, fabric, jewelry making, hobbies and much more.

Mardel Christian and Education Supply, an affiliate company, offers books, Bibles, gifts, church and education supplies as well as homeschooling curriculum.

What began as a $600 start-up, continues to grow and expand–enabling customers across the nation to live a creative life®.

(and Hobby Lobby)

Gah!!! I just love everything about that!

I’ve had some of my readers and followers express concern about the consumerism and waste that goes into shopping at big stores like Hobby Lobby, especially products ending up in “landfill.”

This is a complex and nuanced issue for sure, and I appreciate that they’ve brought it up, so I want to formally address it in this post:

To put it bluntly and clearly…I don't believe consumerism goes against Christian values – and I believe it has a lot of positive impacts.

  1. Consumer spending fuels the economy, creates jobs, and can be seen as a sign of God's blessing on a productive society.

  1. God creates All, so purchasing beautiful things is ultimately a celebration of God's creations.

As I discussed previously in my very first post regarding Proverbs 31, the Bible does celebrate engaging in business and capitalistic activity and finding financial prosperity.

But more important than that is making sure you're careful where you're spending your money...I support Hobby Lobby because they have consistently demonstrated that they have strong Christian moral values, and by buying there, I feel I am showing solidarity for their cause. They have given so much in charitable donations to important Christian movements and organizations so I believe that my purchases go toward that charitable giving.

More from Hobby Lobby’s Website explicitly expressing these values:

As for land fills, I don't want to get too into the weeds on politics on here because I'm really about positivity and support for women, but I don't know if I really buy in to all the hype about that kind of thing and global warming and all of that...regardless, I have Faith and Trust in my Lord and Savior that he will protect us and our Earth, and that all things are Righteous under Him.
