Conviction Over Culture: My Thoughts on Halloween as a Christian Mom, and a Heart Check for True Believers

Hello sweet mamas.
I’m doing a mini entry here to address some comments I got in regards to my Halloween post. A commenter asked if I believed Halloween was Biblical to celebrate.
I believe the answer lies in the intention. Is it a sin to have your children dress up and trick or treat around the neighborhood, especially if it’s a church sanctioned event? Probably not. Is it a sin for adults to fully celebrate and participate in all things centered around the holiday? Probably.

We can’t ignore the pagan roots of the holiday, as well as the nature of the occult that lies with it. It’s no secret that the holiday is tied to witchcraft, other occult practices, and the crime centered around the day as well. In the Old Testament, scripture is very clear about who we must worship and serve. Deuteronomy 12:31 (NLT) says “you must not worship the LORD your God the way other nations worship their gods, for they perform for their gods every detestable act that the LORD hates.” Some Christians like to argue about the necessity of the Old Testament, especially after the sacrifice of Jesus, but the New Testament doubles down on this point. Paul warns the church in Corinth about this. He says , “I am saying these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don’t want you to participate with demons. You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too.” (1 Corinthians 10:20-21, NLT)
As for me and my family, we personally don’t celebrate Halloween. I don’t like the scary decor centered around the holiday, and I don’t want that in my home, where I’ve made it clear we serve the Lord. Our church hosts a Trunk or Treat event and my kids do dress up and get candy at that event. I do love decorating for fall though! I’ve collected really cute pieces from places like Hobby Lobby and other small, mom owned businesses to make my home cozy and inviting.

Ultimately, it’s up to you and God, and your own personal convictions. Pray about it, read your Bible, confer with your pastor and other Godly people you know. This is a no judgement zone either way, just make sure everything you’re doing glorifies the Lord!
and of course....
remember to always find meaning in the small things

Thanks for these insights, Holleigh. I let my sister convince me to take my kids trick or treating and let them celebrate Halloween at their school this year, and I really regret it. I don’t feel I stayed true to my Christian beliefs. The truth is I was just too tired to fight it, and I hate that- I never want to use being tired as an excuse to not stand up for what I know is right. I wish I could homeschool my kiddos like you do too, but my husband says no. I know I should let him lead but it’s so hard to deal with all the secular exposures they get at school all the time, especially…
